International Exchange Program Wraps Up the Fourth Successful Year

09/27/2018

The fourth edition of the International Exchange Program (IEP) that officially began on July 2, wrapped up this week. While most of the exchanges took place over the summer months, a few opted for an early fall program.

Over the four-week exchange, ten firms and 20 interns grouped into three clusters were introduced to the local business culture, clients and the legal environment around the world.

Cluster 1

•    Gowling WLG, England

•    Sołtysiński Kawecki & Szlęzak (SK&S), Poland

•    TozziniFreire Advogados, Brazil

Cluster 2

•    Drinker Biddle & Reath, Illinois, U.S.A.

•    MinterEllison, Australia

•    Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados, Peru

Cluster 3

•    Bae, Kim & Lee, South Korea

•    Mason Hayes & Curran, Ireland

•    Arias Law, Costa Rica

•    Santamarina y Steta, Mexico

Interns and hosts agree that the value in the program is meeting other WLG members and becoming familiar with their respective firms. Interns rave that the host firms went above and beyond to ensure they felt included and their experiences extended beyond the boardroom.

Host firms and interns participated in discussions about future business development opportunities—which is a fundamental goal of the IEP. Learning that home and host firms shared clients allowed discussions to take place that would allow both firms to collaborate and add value to those clients in the future.

Interns benefited by observing court proceedings/trials and attending practice/industry group meetings and local networking meetings related to their own areas of practice. This allowed them to better understand the local legal system and business community. In preparation of the program, interns learned about the clients that their home firm and host firm shared, allowing both firms to leverage their time together to discuss future collaborations for the clients' benefit.

The host firms found value from conversations with and presentations by interns describing their practice, home firm expertise and unique legal knowledge specific to their jurisdiction. Receiving introductions to other WLG members opened the door for future business opportunities.

Overall, everyone was left wanting more. Thank you to our host firms, interns and buddies for investing the time and energy into continuing to make this program a success.

Ashley LeCroy, WLG’s Manager of Events and Member Programs, will be following up with participants to further discuss the development of the program. The goal is to expand the program to more host firms and interns and strengthen relationships within the WLG network.
