Success Story: U.S. Company Receives Multinational Advice on Encryption Control Review

A client of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP manufactures and distributes products primarily for automation control of industrial and commercial applications, such as automotive production lines, water/waste treatment plants, cement production and mining applications. Some of the company's products use encryption products created by others in order to protect know-how and trade secrets. A legal question arose as to whether certain of these products would require an encryption review by a government agency in China, India or Russia. Drinker Biddle export control partner Joan Koenig contacted WLG member firms in those three countries (King & Wood Mallesons in China, Vaish Associates in India and CMS Russia) and received prompt and expert advice and counsel on these issues. This has become an ongoing collaboration among the WLG member firms involved, as the client has returned several times since the initial inquiry for review and counsel on additional products that might be subject to encryption control review.
