Bridging Practice and Academia

Published on May 22, 2025

We were honored to collaborate with Universitas Brawijaya in Malang, where our Senior Partner, Rahayu Ningsih Hoed, and Senior Associate, Hendrik Pasaribu, were invited to serve as Guest Lecturers in two lecture sessions and as Facilitators in the Lecturer Upgrading Program organized by the Faculty of Law.

This initiative is part of our firm’s "Road to M&T's 45th Anniversary” celebration—marking over four decades of commitment to legal excellence and contribution to the broader legal community through knowledge-sharing and academic engagement. It was truly inspiring to engage with passionate students and dedicated faculty members in an academic environment that values growth, innovation, and collaboration.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Afifah Kusumadara, SH. LL.M. SJD., Head of the Doctoral (Ph.D.) Program at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya, for her sincere and warm welcome, openness to collaboration, and continuous support. We also extend our deep appreciation to her dedicated team for their excellent coordination and efforts in organizing this event.

Throughout the program, Rahayu Ningsih Hoed, or Yayuk as we affectionately call her—known for her deep passion for learning and teaching—shared valuable practical insights drawn from decades of experience, alongside Hendrik Pasaribu. Together, they presented the following topics:

Private International Law and Its Development in Practice

Guest Lecturer – Wednesday, 14 May 2025
This session explored the steps required to recognize and enforce foreign court judgments and arbitral awards in Indonesia. It covered procedural requirements, practical challenges such as translation and evidence gathering, and examined real-life cases. The discussion concluded with proposals to improve and streamline the enforcement process.

Drafting International Contracts and Its Development in Practice

Guest Lecturer – Thursday, 15 May 2025
In this lecture, we addressed the fundamentals of drafting cross-border contracts, including the sources of governing rules and essential clauses such as force majeure, choice of law, and dispute resolution. The session featured practical drafting tips, sample language, and two case studies highlighting how to prevent and resolve common drafting mistakes.

Upgrading "Private International Law” for Faculty Members

Lecturer Upgrading Session – Thursday, 15 May 2025
Designed specifically for faculty members of the Faculty of Law, this session focused on the practical application of international civil law. Key topics included choice of law and forum, domicile, public policy considerations, the enforceability of digital contracts, and data protection challenges. The session concluded with real-world case studies, template clauses, and an outlook on emerging solutions such as online dispute resolution.

We were thrilled to witness the students’ enthusiasm during the lectures and the faculty’s active engagement during the upgrading session. The exchange of knowledge and perspectives reinforced the value of bridging academic theory with legal practice.

We sincerely thank Universitas Brawijaya for the warm hospitality and trust. We look forward to nurturing this meaningful collaboration in the future and continuing to support the development of Indonesia’s legal education.
