José Augusto Dias de Castro, New Co-chair of the Energy & Infrastructure Group
You recently stepped into a co-chair role for WLG’s Energy & Infrastructure Group — what are you most looking forward to in this position?
Energy and infrastructure are some of the most vibrant industries worldwide, facing severe challenges to keep the world moving in times of climate change. It brings us a wide range of legal aspects to be tackled, which led me to join the committee in the first place. Seeking a bigger participation in the interesting discussions with colleagues from other jurisdictions made the idea of joining the leadership something natural.
What first drew you to the Infrastructure space, and what keeps you interested in the work today?
Public-private relationship has been my field of study and legal practice for two decades. There is no other industry in Brazil reflecting the complexities of these interactions, given that private investment in infrastructure is highly regulated. The participation of private companies in the construction and operation of infrastructure is relatively recent (less than forty years), so the regulatory framework is still under construction. I could not ask for a better space to work as a lawyer.
What is one area within energy or infrastructure where you think cross-border collaboration among WLG members could really grow?
One common topic is how different jurisdictions can provide the comfort that the private sector needs to do the massive investments that infrastructure requires. WLG members are experienced in helping international investors to navigate the domestic regulations, and our network provides an extremely important source of information and assistance abroad whenever necessary.
Outside of work, what is something you enjoy or find energizing — whether a hobby or daily routine
Spending time with my two daughters is definitely my main source of energy. I also have music as a constant company, listening and playing the guitar whenever I can.
