WLG | exchange Intern
CMS Germany → Interned at MinterEllison (Australia)

Franziska's story... During Franziska Fuchs' WLG | exchange secondment at MinterEllison, she participated in a WLG Restructuring & Insolvency Group meeting.  After her internship ended, she stopped in Singapore on her way back home and went to dinner with Group Co-Chair Smitha Menon and colleagues at WongPartnership. Smitha noted that Franziska's involvement encouraged young lawyers at her firm to register for the group's January meeting.

Tell us about a stand-out moment from your WLG | exchange.
The entire WLG | exchange has been an outstanding experience for me, with a lot of memorable moments. However, a particularly stand-out moment for me was the meeting with Ian Davis, the former WLG president. His commitment was instrumental in expanding and strengthening the network. Gaining insights from someone who helped lay the foundation for today’s global cooperation was truly motivating, and I greatly appreciate that he took the time to meet with us and share his experiences.

What’s one striking similarity or difference you’ve noticed between your home and host jurisdiction?
Although our two jurisdictions are geographically far apart and the respective economies have a focus on different sector groups, I found in my conversations with colleagues that the restructuring field is often shaped by very similar – though not identical – challenges. For example, both jurisdictions are facing a crisis in the real estate sector, which continues to manifest in various ways. Economic developments are heavily influenced by global political events, and decisions made on one continent can have significant repercussions worldwide. When it comes to finding effective responses and solutions to these challenges, we have much to learn from each other’s experiences. That is why maintaining close dialogue and staying connected is more important than ever.
