Why did you decide to become a lawyer?
I had enjoyed debating in school and really found meaning and joy in learning about issues, constructing arguments and persuading others to see your perspective. Being a lawyer would give me maximum opportunity to do this, not just in a litigation perspective, but even in corporate negotiations.
What advice would you give to a young female associate looking to make partner/advance her career?
Being driven and ambitious may sometimes be seen as negative attributes for women but I would advise young female associates to embrace these traits and to cultivate taking the initiative and raising their hand whenever opportunities arise.
How can women support other women in their organizations?
By mentoring other women in the organization and supporting each other throughout their professional development. Every organization has its own identity and culture and I find that it helps a lot to get feedback on the unique workings of an organization and advice on what has worked in the past and what would work to ensure professional advancement.
What do you hope changes for the next generation of women lawyers in the practice of law?
I hope that the next generation of women will not need to feel that to excel and climb the corporate ladder (including in a law firm) will require sacrifices in terms of personal growth or quality time with family. I hope that there would be specific programs that would take into consideration the natural demands of being a wife, mother or caretaker to make sure that these would not be considered obstacles to advancement or promotion.
What book/podcast/film has shaped a new perspective for you that has led to a positive outcome in your career?
I would say the book Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. The book highlighted some of the issues being faced by women in the workplace that I was not even really conscious of or, even if conscious of, I didn't realize were issues to be concerned with. I found the book liberalizing and it has allowed me to recognize and take advantage of opportunities that may be available without self-limiting thoughts.
